Because #IAmShe

Asmi’s Journal
2nd April

Daughters are given different upbringing as compared to the sons in our society. This is pretty evident in every household in everyday activities, even if we all openly deny it. The truth will not change. There are many things which I had accepted while growing up and then many things after I was an adult and then again many things when I got married. But now I can’t help but wonder, for how long?

For how long, for many more years, until how many more generations, women will simply keep on accepting the facts and changes happening around them. Without voicing out their concerns, their opinions?

For how long will our lives be controlled by the people around us?

50 years back

‘Why does she have to go to school? She’s a girl.’
You shouldn’t stay outside home after dark. You’re a girl.’
‘You should get her married soon. She’s a girl.’
‘Why does she have to work after marriage? She’s a woman.’
‘You can’t do the last rites of your parents. You’re a woman.’

‘You shouldn’t stay outside home after dark. You’re a girl.’
‘You should get her married soon. She’s a girl.’
‘Why does she have to work after marriage? She’s a woman.’
‘You can’t do the last rites of your parents. You’re a woman.’

years back

*girls in lower class still face this issue*
*not much change*
‘You should get her married soon. She’s a girl.’
‘Why does she have to work after marriage? She’s a woman.’
‘You can’t do the last rites of your parents. You’re a woman.’

Today

*girls in lower class still face this issue*
*not much change*
*some change*
‘Why does she have to work after marriage? She’s a woman.’
‘You can’t do the last rites of your parents. You’re a woman.’

For how long, I ask!

For how many more generations do we have to wait until we can live our lives on our terms? Why every major phase in our lives is governed by the family or society.

It’s our life. Then why do we need someone else’s approval or permission?

WHY?
